Christian Sympathy - Rev Allan Campbell

Rev. Dr. Allan Neal Campbell, 72, of Indiana, PA passed away on October 15, 2019 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. The son of the late Ralph Campbell and the late Grace Lorig Campbell, he was born on May 10, 1947 in Pittsburgh.

Allan was a graduate of Indiana High School. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and did extensive graduate studies at Northern Theological Seminary in Oak Brook, Illinois. He was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Palmer Theological Seminary in St. David’s, PA.

For forty-seven years Allan was pastor of the Glen Campbell Baptist Church in Glen Campbell, Pennsylvania. While serving at Glen Campbell as pastor, he was asked by the small congregation at Pine Flats Baptist Church to also provide them ministry and for more than ten years offered an 8 am worship service there. Additionally while serving Glen Campbell Baptist he held many volunteer leadership positions within the American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware as well as managing the investments for the denomination’s region.

For many of his years in the ministry, Allan was bi-vocational working in other positions that would serve the community. Until 1977 he taught special education at Marion Center, leaving to become the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Highlands Chapter of the American Heart Association. He later served as a senior executive with Lee Hospital of Johnstown from 1984 to 1995, during which time he also hosted the television show “Health Lee Living”. Allan also served the community through volunteer work and involvement in politics. This service included many years on the Indiana Library Board, helping to start the Indiana Endowment, and representing the community at two national Republican conventions.

Allan had wide interests, many of them focusing on the beauty of life. Every year working in his flower garden brought him great joy. As a lover of the arts, he served on the board of the Johnstown Symphony, served as the Vice Chair of the board of Penn State University public TV and radio, and was the founder of the Indiana Symphony Society. The building and maintenance of the Glen Campbell church pipe organ was a multi-year project that was a labor of love. Until his death he served as the chaplain of the Indiana Organ Guild.

Allan will be sadly missed by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy; daughter Oressa Campbell-Miller and husband Kevin; daughter Alexandra Frick and husband Byron; and daughter Alicia Bitler and husband David. He was a much loved Pop-Pop to five little grandchildren: Maddison Miller, William Bitler, Campbell Frick, Amelia Frick, and Abigail Frick; and a grandfather and close friend to his two step-grandsons: Christopher Miller (fiancée Kim) and Bryan Miller (wife Felicia). Allan is also survived by two brothers: Glenn Campbell (wife Kyle) of Indiana and Donald Campbell (wife Gayle) of West Chester, PA.

Friends will be received from 5-8 on Friday October 25th at Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home at 965 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA. A visitation will be at the Glen Campbell Baptist Church at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 26th. Following the visitation, a Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am with Dr. David Skinner officiating. Interment will be at Forest Baptist Church Cemetery in Winburne, PA immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Glen Campbell Baptist Church Music Program, Glenwood Avenue, Glen Campbell, PA 15742 or the Visiting Nurses Association, Suite 3000, Hospital Road, Indiana, PA 15701
